About this template

When a managed service provider runs part of a defense contractor's environment, CMMC Level 2 responsibility is split. Some assessment objectives belong to the MSP, some to the organization seeking certification (OSC), and many are shared. Assessors and auditors expect that split to be written down objective by objective. This workbook gives MSPs, their clients and the auditors reviewing them one place to record it.

What the workbook covers

Everything sits in a single section, CMMC Level 2, with 324 rows. Each row is one assessment objective, shown with its control number, domain, CMMC control identifier and name, the full control statement and the objective text. The domains begin with Access Control and continue through Awareness and Training, Audit and Accountability, Configuration Management and the rest of the Level 2 controls. Because the rows go down to the objective level, you can split responsibility within a control rather than assigning it as a whole. For example, the MSP might enforce session lock settings while the OSC defines the inactivity period.

Working through it well

  • Fill it in with the client, not for them. The OSC has to agree to the duties assigned to it.
  • Work control by control. Objectives that define a policy or parameter often sit with the OSC, while objectives that enforce it on managed systems often sit with the MSP.
  • For shared objectives, state exactly what each party does in its own responsibility field. Avoid a bare "shared."
  • Use Notes to point to the tool, policy or contract clause that backs up each answer, so an auditor can trace it.
  • Use row status to show which objectives are agreed and which are still being discussed.

The finished matrix documents who is responsible. It does not show that controls are implemented and is not a certification.

Questions

What is a CMMC shared responsibility matrix?

It is a document showing, for each CMMC requirement, whether the MSP, the organization seeking certification or both are responsible, and what each party does. This workbook records that split for Level 2 at the assessment objective level.

How many requirements does this workbook include?

It has 324 rows in one CMMC Level 2 section. Each row is a single assessment objective with its control identifier, control name, control statement and objective text.

Who should fill in the responsibility columns?

The MSP and the client should complete it together so both parties agree to their assigned duties. Auditors can then review the completed matrix and the supporting notes.

Can I record shared responsibilities, not just MSP or OSC?

Yes. Each row has an overall Responsibility field plus separate MSP Responsibility and OSC Responsibility fields, so you can describe what each side does on a shared objective.

Does completing this matrix mean we are CMMC compliant?

No. The matrix documents who is responsible for each objective. Implementing the controls and passing an assessment are separate steps.

Can an MSP use this for more than one client?

Each import creates a new workbook. You can import the template once per client and keep each client's matrix separate.

Do I need a paid plan to use this template?

Getting the template is free with a Vertask account. Importing it into a working checklist uses Workbooks, which is on the Pro plan; new workspaces start with a 30-day Pro trial.

Can I change it after importing?

Yes. Importing creates your own copy: rename, add or remove sections, rows and columns. The template itself never changes, and you can clone your copy per client, property or device.

Provided as is.
