QR Code Safety

We want to take a moment to raise awareness about a potential risk that many of us might not be fully aware of: the dangers associated with unknown QR codes.

QR codes have become increasingly prevalent as a means to access websites, applications, and various digital content. While they can be incredibly convenient, they present serious security threats if scanned from an unknown or untrusted source. It is also difficult to tell where these take you until its too late, make it the perfect tool for cyber criminals.

Consider the following scenarios:

  • Have you ever scanned a QR code to access a menu at a restaurant? Can you be certain that the menu hasn't been tampered with by a previous customer to include a malicious QR code?
  • Did you use a QR code to pay for parking downtown? How can you be sure that the QR code hasn't been altered to redirect payments elsewhere, resulting in fines or towing of your vehicle?
  • Even if a QR code claims to lead to a legitimate website like google.com, there's no guarantee it won't redirect you to a malicious site before redirecting to the legitimate one, potentially compromising your accounts.

To mitigate these risks, please adhere to the following precautions:

  • Trust with Care: Only scan QR codes from sources you trust implicitly. If you're unsure of the source, it's best to refrain from scanning altogether. Whenever possible, opt for alternative methods.
  • Inspect First: Does it look modified somehow, like someone taped or glued it on? If its a menu, does it look different from other menus? If it looks suspicious or unfamiliar, don't proceed.
  • Keep Updated: Regularly update your device's software and security settings. If you have an outdate app or device, someone can hack your device in milliseconds.

Your attention to these precautions is vital for safeguarding your personal accounts, devices, and information.
